My mother has a HP laptop that is about 5 years old and for some reason it just will not charge. The charging light is on for a few seconds then disappears after unplugging the power cable from the wall. Taking the battery out did nothing, tried several times. Any idea of what the problem is, is it a dead battery or power brick?

Is it just me or is Grammar slowly becoming extinct on LTT?

Probably dead battery as they can only go through so many charge cycles before they need to be replaced. Does the computer run without the battery in it, while its plugged in?

no, which leads me think there is another problem.

Remove the battery for 30mins. And look for a battery reset switch on the laptop. Had a similar problem with my Sony VAIO. Sometimes laptops tend to ignore the battery and this will help usually. Try it ^^

Some laptops will not run at all without a battery, even with AC plugged in.  The early 2009 15" macbook pros (the ones with a user removable battery) were this way.

We have a laptop whose battery went completely dead.  it wouldn't run off of just the AC if the battery removed.  After replacing the battery with a new one it was fine.
