If you have 2 graphic cards, do they need to have the exact same chip to work in SLI/crossfire? (only 2 280's. or 2 770's?)

Yeah, unless they are a rebrand, like the 7970 and the 280x.

Wrong.

CFX - Any 2 cards with the same chip (some units can be disabled), so for example a 7970 (Tahiti XT) can go with a 7950 (Tahiti Pro) and the 7870 XT (Tahiti LE), because they all have the Tahiti chip. The stronger card will disable units/memory and downclock to meet the lesser card.

SLI - Only cards with the exact same chip can SLI (770-770, 780-780), not sure if they have to have the same VRAM or it will disable additional memory like CFX and the faster card will downclock to meet the slower card.
