My friend has a used Alienware R6 with 17 7700k , 32 gb ram, 512gb SSD and 1080 ti for $800 - 1000

The case is damaged and dirty, is it better than getting a completely new PC?

800-1000 is a pretty big range.  Used to be I’d say for $800 hell no. A better machine could be built for less That 7700k is about as fast as a 3300x which is a $134 chip and unlike an am4 motherboard if all of a sudden 4/8 won’t cut it you’d be hosed.  The 1080ti competes speed wise with cards costing $400.  The problem is that number is likely to go down in a week or two.   Used to be you could build a better new machine for less money.  Parts are hard to get these days though.  Today You could build a 3300x system brand new for around $800 or a bit less. Just as fast or faster with a potentially much longer lifespan.  It would be parts of course.

you want to spend a grand do this instead better machine than his and brand new to boot

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
