Aorus Z490 Xtreme with i9-10900K crashes randomly

rtwpsom2

Build:

Intel i9-10900k cpu

Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme motherboard (BIOS build F7c dated 5/28/2020 was installed when I built the system)

Quadro RTX 6000 video card (driver version 442.92, also installed after problem first exhibited)

128GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro memory

2TB Sabrent Rocket M.2 Boot Drive

EVGA Supernova 1000 G5 Power Supply

Win10 build 2004 (problem predates this build install)

It's running pretty stable on Win10, I can go 3-4 days without a single problem but then will hit a random crash.  Other times it will only be a few hours after a previous crash.  When it does crash, it is not BSOD'ing, just freezing then trying to reboot. On reboot the BIOS will fail to load and give the choice of "load optimal settings and boot, load optimal setting and reboot, or enter bios." It won't recognize the boot drive until I have restored the BIOS settings. It will do this whether I am overclocked or not, whether I have XMP disabled or not. I don't think it's anything I am doing that is causing it because it commonly happens when I am AFK, though not always. If I had to guess, I'd say it's not windows doing it because no BSOD.  I'm not seeing any pertinent info in the crash logs, only "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." when it has rebooted.

Yeah, BIOS was updated to latest (F7C) when I built the system, and is dated 5/28. Win10 is version 2004, but that only installed on the 11th (3 days ago) and the crashes were happening prior to that.

Could be an outdated driver (for the OS) then, also new Windows will not help things.

Does that mean I'll have to wait for Windows to update it's drivers?

You could try find one from the board vendor's site.

Since you mentioned crashing after idle for a while, maybe disable all power saving measures like C-states for now.

Already grabbed all the latest drivers when I built it, there were several things that wouldn't let me do a stable boot until I had them.

I went ahead and disabled C-states, we'll see if that helps. I appreciate the advice. I'm going to leave the thread open for now, in case anyone else wants to chime in.

Haven't had any crashes since disabling the c-states. Generally would have had one or maybe two by now, so I think windows interactions with that might have been the issue.  Gonna leave them disabled for a few weeks then try again when a new bios comes out, I guess. This isn't going to do any long term damage or shorten the lifespan of the CPU is it?  It's mainly just going to use more power when it's not asleep,  right?

lifespan of the cpu?.. next gen will have gen4 pcie, for m.2 drivers. is this a home system or for work? looks like a pro 3D CAD system..

sounds like you will get the 11900k when it comes out so you will never notice it :D

I might consider it if it's less than $1000, but my NVME sticks are capped at gen3 so it isn't going to help me a ton there unless I want to spend another $2k on new M.2's.  That's my fault for getting the Sabrent Rockets instead of the Rocket Q's when I was buying.
