I have fat PS3 witch is collecting dust.

I would like to convert it to a NAS. I will attach an external HDD for storage.

Any ideas how to do it?

I want to create a Nas also from an old laptop. I think FreeNAS is the way to go there.

Suggestions?

I use i5-3470, 8GB kingston, SSD + 2x hdd, GTX 970

What firmware version does your PS3 have?

Its a long shot but if it has a version before 3.21 you could install a PPC build of linux on it.

As for the laptop FreeNAS will do the trick.

Do you intend using it with all files or just for media?

Not sure but I think it was Kmeaw 4.41.

I think ipI would use them for all file formats.

Biggest part would be media.

If you are on kmeaw then you should be able to install homebrew, there are FTP server apps that you can use on the PS3, that might be your best solution. Also you dont have to install linux distros..takes up too much space imo. And 3.21 psh Linux on OtherOS++ is way better than what sony has ever made possible. Double check firmware, if it really does say kmeaw then the 4.41 part is a lie(spoof), kmeaw was only ever released on 3.55 and is outdated and old. Get the latest rebug firmware.
