Q: What is ShotSpotter?

A: ShotSpotter is an advanced system of sensors, algorithms and artificial intelligence that detects, locates and alerts police to gunshots in real time.

Once the sound of gunfire is picked up, the system time-stamps the sound and triangulates its exact location. The sound is first confirmed as gunfire through the software before being sent to an acoustic expert for additional analysis. Once the analyst confirms the sound was gunfire, police are notified.

This entire process takes less than one minute.

- A man police found suffering from gunshot wounds was pronounced dead at UMC Trauma early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., patrol officers responded to a Shot Spotter notification in the 1800 block of J Street. Upon arriving, officers found a man laying on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
