Current Specs:

AsRock A320m HDv R4

Ryzen 5 3400G

16gb (2x8gb) RAM

Asetek AIO CPU cooler

500W PSU

I asked on the forums here a while ago about getting a new graphics card (I am still up in the air on that, but I know I need to have a better power supply first, and they are all out of stock online). It was recommended that I should upgrade the CPU before going for a decent GPU, and to go for the Ryzen 7 3700x, which might require a motherboard swap... I am open to this, but I am so lost when it comes to trying to figure out what motherboards are going to be better and still fit the Ryzen 7 chip I am looking at.

I will not be overclocking anything, will be upgrading PSU when they become available again, and will likely be getting a dedicated GPU as well as the last step in my upgrade process.

Most games I am playing are very CPU heavy, and not terribly GPU heavy, so I assume I would benefit from the CPU/mobo upgrade more than the GPU in the short term.

The mobo I was looking at, but I am definitely not attached to: https://www.newegg.com/asus-pro-ws-x570-ace/p/N82E16813119194?Item=N82E16813119194&quicklink=true

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I gpu upgrade would make a difference, a lot of things are better than vega 11

Laptop: HP Spectre x360 13t, i7 8565u with 16 gigs, 512 gig  nvme ssd, UHD 620 4k

Other laptop: Acer Chromebook cb3 431 with 4 gigs, celeron n3060 with hd 400 and 16 gigs eMMC soon to be a minecraft server?

I do plan on getting a GPU, was thinking the radeon 5700x, but again, open to suggestions. I know I won't need anything insane like a 2080... but the most immediate need is for faster CPU (preferably better single core performance for the games I am running at the moment, but with the good multi core performance for other games down the road.

You know that you will need a gpu either way because no ryzen 7 has integrated graphics. The 3400g would be just fine with something like an rx580 to a 1660 Super

Well, that is good to know! So GPU first off... But then still the question of CPU and mobo combo. would it be worth upgrading both? or just do a GPU and see how it goes?

This mobo is ok for the processor, but anything better than you should upgrade to something like a tomahawk max, which supports 3rd gen ryzen out of the box, in terms of cpu, for a budget the 3300x or the 1600af are fine, for a bit more, then the 3600, and after the the 3700x would be the next choice in terms of price.

So, I see the RX580 would work with my current power supply (supposedly) because it does not need additional power over what it gets from the board (no 6 pin connector), so would it be better in your opinion to get the GPU, then wait for 4th Gen Ryzen to roll out later this year and maybe get a better price on the 3700x (or similar)?

Forgive the ignorance, I haven't had much dealings with Windows machines until very recently when my iMac gave up the ghost, and I switched back...

No problem, im kinda new too! What you suggested would be a great idea.

Keep in mind non-G Ryzens do not have integrated graphics. You need a GPU to run anything more than a quad core, with exception to Intel.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora

I would go for discrete GPU for an nvidia 2060 especially now as nvidia Ampere is on the horizon and nvidia will cut prices big time on current generation (2060, 2070, etc....)

I have myself a laptop with a 2060 and 9300H for CPU, and what I can tell games are always GPU heavy whil I benchmark them and even a laptop 2060 can handle Red Dead Redemption 2 VERY decently!

AMD is coming back in terms of CPU's, for GPU's I would go for an nvidia, especially because of its price/performance value

See, people always say this, but I never actually see it happen.

Well, I was able to find an RX580 for under $200. 8gb vRAM. I would much rather spend the cash on the better CPU/mobo combo, as most of my games barely hit 60% of my integrated graphics, except for brief periods. The real issue I have is that the games are SUPER CPU heavy... Hearts of Iron IV is a big one that just drags on the CPU, and it can primarily only use a single core for most of the game, but some parts of the game are offloaded to a second core. The big reason for getting the GPU is to temporarily relieve stress from the CPU (which is currently providing the graphics), and to have support for Display Port, as I am currently running two monitors with DVI/VGA and HDMI. (I am currently using VGA as my DVI cable died...)

RX580 under 200 bucks is an amazing deal. I had that card myself and the driver and management software is much more advanced than those of nvidia

To sum it up

AMD: sophisticated sw for you hardware

nVidia: raw power

Your choice, although for a future proof solution I still would go for a 2060 desktop

I will probably upgrade into the 2060 or 2080 eventually... But after doing some asking around, it seems like I would benefit a bit better from a CPU/mobo upgrade. But it seems like maybe I should wait until the fall to see what the new generation AMD will be? (I don't need or really want top of the line...) I am thinking I might be able to get a better price on current Gen stuff once the next Gen is announced
