Boot problems when installing new SSD/HDD

Any time i install a new solid state drive or Hard disk drive the computer wont boot and makes me clean all hard drives and reinstall the OS before it will boot. Sometimes it doesnt show in bios or it doesnt like certain sata cables its plugged into. Sometimes it will BSOD until i plug it into a sata port that it likes. Other times it wont let me set the boot order and it picks its own hard drive to boot from. 

 

My motherboard is a asus p8z68v Pro

 

I never did a bios update on the motherboard before.

you should, it might not even support the ssd you have put in it before you upgrade..
