Upgrade tips

Currently have a x79 system that got a faulty A Dimm slot, so considering upgrading or just getting another x79 platform board. Based off pricing, seems like people are trying to sell boards for $300+ CAD. Just wondering the overall opinion of either buying another x79 or upgrade to ryzen?

Current:

ROG x79 formula

4960x

12 gb ram 1333

Vega 64

All watercooled.

The jump would force me to upgrade mobo, cpu, ram, and my cpu waterblock. Estimating 500 for mobo cpu and ram combo. Realistic?

Well.... I'd think you could get some new AMD hardware going between 300-500 CAD. Don't see why not.

Anything practical should be a decent performance enhancement. Night and day difference.

Did I talk you into an upgrade yet?

Well the fact that I'll run DDR4 at high speeds is somewhat tempting too. Just wish people would sell x79 boards for a realistic price.

X79 is an old enough platform that its not worth putting more money into IMO.

Yeah, even a 2700x is like 500 meanwhile they were going for 220 just a couple months ago. My entire budget would be blown just by buying a cpu.

My best bet I think would be searching classifieds or Craigslist in America because even Kijiji and classifieds in Canada have used second gen 2600's going for 300+. At that rate I might as well get a used threadripper.
