Installing Linux on an external SSD

Hi everyone,
currently, I'm using a MacBook Air with both macOS (High Sierra) and win 10. I just bought a new external SSD (SanDisk extreme portable).
I would like to install a Linux distro on it (Manjaro), and I couldn't find a useful guide on how to get Linux to run from the external SSD, without effecting my current OSs.
I would appreciate your help with this. Mainly, I would like some help with formatting the SSD to the proper format for Linux and install Manjaro.

At least, on pure Arch Linux, you can build the partitions manually using this guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Partitioning#Example_layouts

I have Linux installed on an external drive which I accomplished via `dd` (copying an existing install), however for the most part the installation is just like installing it anywhere else except that your install drive is the USB drive.  It's just a matter of telling the macbook to boot to the external disk.

Just treat it as an internal drive.
