Hi!

I just found my old Radeon SSD, (R3 series 120GB) it had an old win7. I tried to format it, make it into an external one (via an external HDD enclosure).

Longstory short, it didn't allow me to format it, (partition wizzard says it's "bad").If i try to open it's properties in the windows explorer it "doesn't answer" then restarts itself.  Now i got to a point where nothing in Windows can see it, i can't format it, i can't assign a drive letter to it (via EXT2FSD). I've tried Linux mint, same thing. It gives me a read error on XY.

Is it dead? How can i "wipe" everything off of it?

What's the error you are getting? Maybe the drive is write protected.

Did you use it heavily before or just as an OS drive?

It was just an OS drive, i didn't use it for like a year. The error on Linux is something like "not found on" but if you want to i can tell you the exact error.

Are you familiar with diskpart in windows?

Open the Start Menu and enter "run" and hit enter

A small box will appear. Now enter "diskpart"

now enter "list disk"

# It will now list the drives connected

now enter "select disk x"

# x is the number of the disk from the previous command

then enter "attributes disk clear readonly"

Other things to check for:

Change out the SATA-Cable, a bad cable can cause issues with accessing a drive.

Check with DLDIAG or Sea Tools for errors on the drive by reading the SMART values.

Also make sure AHCI is enabled in bios, otherwise your SSD may not be able to be accessed.

If you want to wipe the data there are several ways, either by physical damaging the chips with a drill for example, also extreme heat or severe cold will erase or corrupt data on that drive. Also electric shock but that's a bit more dangerous.

Yeah tried that too, "list disk" doesn't work, it "freezes" the command promt until i disconnect the drive.

The SATA cable is good, tried it with another SSD.

What is DLDIAG?

I want to use it later, so i don't think drilling will do the work.

Does the drive show up at all in 'This PC' ?

Does it comes up under Disk Management?

Wondering if you can run a SMART scan on the Radeon SSD...to check the health condition of the drive.

Update:

I can't run anything disk-related while it's plugged it, Crystal D. M. for example doesn't even open until i unplug the drive. I have no idea why is it doing that.

Edit: Somehow i made it work, 100% error.... image.png.fb05f76320569292341fa5a9b516793b.png

@kecstama RAW means the disk is not in any readable format that Windows can understand. But seeing how Linux also runs into issues, the SSD might be damaged or something (could be physical), so it is not being recognized.

Not sure if any of these methods can/will get the drive working again...
