1. Budget & Location 🇧🇪 Belgium. 700-900 euros excluding second monitor and graphics card (already purchased).

2. Aim: Rendering images and movies using Visual Molecular Dynamics and Blender. I also run software I write in C++ that tends to be RAM and single CPU intensive. I'd love to play Red Dead Redemption 2, but that's not so important.

3. Monitors: Already own a HP 24es which is 1080p with 60hz. The second one I've yet to pick, but probably 1080p and 60hz.

4. Peripherals. OS: Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18 dual boot.

5. Why are you upgrading: I need a specific type of GPU to work with Visual Molecular Dynamics. My current graphics card is a POS I can't get to run on Ubuntu (optimus driver issues I could never resolve).

Questions:

  1. I'm wondering about the PSU. I couldn't find any of the listed options on the PSU Tier list, but maybe the model numbers are different in the US...
  2. CPU choice versus intel?
  3. Will cooling will be an issue. It get's up to 30 C / 86 F in my room in the summer.
  4. W-LAN. I have no idea about this, but I work upstairs and can't get a wire up here so it must be wireless. Right now I have a WIRELESS INTEL® ADVANCED-N 6235 (300Mbps) and the speed doubles if I plug it in via ethernet.

Purchased already:
INNO3D GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5X Gaming OC

2 x 3TB HDD I plan to install for backups.

HP 24es which is 1080p with 60hz

My current build on Ankermann is here:

I would double check that the memory is compatible with a 2700x (I'm pretty sure the LPX were generally good on these)

Unless you are using this for work you could save money on purchasing windows and deal with the watermark and lack of visual customization

The be quiet pure power 10 got a good review so I'd imagine the 11 is the same

I love my dark rock pro on my 3900x so I trust their wattage claims

*AMD vs Intel which is more important to you? single or multi core? single go intel, multi go amd

Audio go Brrrrrr

After doing some more reading in the forums and reading Psittac's advice I went with a Ryzen 5 3600 6x 3.60GHz. It compared better to the 2700 and I didn't see where I'd need 8 vs 6 cores, so good to have a faster single CPU. I got a good tip here that the 3600X is unnecessary if you have a separate cooling unit, so that saved me 40 bucks. All of the similarly priced Intel CPUs from Ankermann were worse performers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Coming back to say that the INNO3D GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5X Gaming OC is a 3-slot GPU, so it covers the other pci ports completely on this board (ASUS Prime B450M-A (90MB0YR0-M0EAY0)). I can't have both a pci wifi card and this GPU in this motherboard. I can't get a right angle PCI extender cable where I am and I'm not even sure if that will fit as the clearance is minimal once the GPU is installed. I should have switched from a m-atx board to an atx motherboard, went with a 2-slot GPU or a USB based wifi card.
