Hi!

I've recently obtained a static IP and have registered my own domain.

I'm planning on hosting a few services for myself, such as a private cloud (I've already set up a nextcloud system), a media server, my own git server, some sites and whatnot.

Currently I'm testing out a few solutions using a kodlix mini-pc that I had bought some time ago, using ubuntu server as OS.

It's really great as it is extremely low power, fanless and yet fairly capable (it's a pentium N4200).

However, this is far from a permanent solution, and going forward I'd like to build a custom PC, which would be much more expandable.

I'm looking for something that can be kept on at all times, so low power is really a priority.

Also, fanless would be great (or at least some solution where the fans can be kept at a minimum or stopped during idle times).

Finally, I'd like to get a reasonably small form factor (micro-ATX would be fine).

Also, I don't want to do any storage redundancy (RAID), as I'm going to deploy a periodical backup system (on a distinct hardware system) further down the line.

I know it would be best to have both redundancy and backup, but I think that while a backup system is really important, redundancy would be overkill at the moment.

Keep in mind, I'm planning on having very low disk usage, so whatever storage system I choose will probabily become obsolete before it gets even close to its MTBF.

Budget-wise, I'd say no more than 500 euros.

I'm a little torn between AMD and Intel right now.

The pentium G5400 looks like a pretty good bang for the buck, but a Ryzen 3 would be considerably more capable at 50% more cost.

A preliminary list might be (prices from Amazon Italy):

 * CPU: Pentium Gold G5400 (62 €)

 * Mobo: MSI H310 PRO-VDH Plus (59 €)

 * RAM: Crucial CT8G4DFS824A 2400 MHz (36 €)

 * Storage (OS): Samsung SSD 860 EVO 250 GB (60 €)

 * Storage (data): WD Red 4 TB (127 €)

 * Case: CM MasterBox Q300L (45 €)

For a grand total of about 390 €

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Should I go for a Ryzen 3? It might be overkill, but it would also give me more headroom for future projects.

What are my chances of getting the system to run at idle with the fans switched off?

Edit: I already have a power supply and don't need a monitor, as I'll be accessing the system via secure shell from my main computer.
