Hi,

I was wondering if it would be possible to run FreeNas and Windows on the same build? What I am envisioning is taking my current build and buying a separate boot drive (128gb ssd that I have lying around) and 2 hard drives (in raid 1) for the FreeNas (I would not be trying to run windows and the server at the same time). The FreeNas is going to be used for file backups and media.

If it matters, the current build is an i7 4770k Haswell, 32 gb ram, 960gtx, Asrock z97 pro3, and 750 watt Corsair power supply (and its own 500gb SSD and 1TB HDD).

I basically don't use the current build too much and this would save me the cost of a new case, mobo, cpu, powersupply and ram.

Thank you in advance!

I don't see the point in this. Why don't you just throw your hard drives in your system and put them in raid array on windows and transfer your files to and from Windows. You can also do a network share from Windows

I was hopefully going to use plex and also torrent that I could do from anywhere in the house or even outside the home. I was thinking you cannot really access files from outside the home or start torrents from outside the home with just windows correct?

True, but why not just use a cheapo dedicated system? My FreeNAS+Plex server is an old Dell OptiPlex with a celeron that does the job just fine.

Unfourtunately, I don't have any around. Thus, it would still cost extra for me. (thanks for the quick replies as well)

I am in agreement with @NZgamer I don't see advantages of putting freenas and windows on 1 computer like what your describing.

I think I would just stick with Windows, Plex and any torrent clients will run on Windows just as well as freenas.

If you want you can put Docker or Hyper-V/Virtual box on the windows computer and run any Linux/FreeBSD OS you need to.

I use plex on my main system and it acts as a media hub even when im using it and is probably the better way to go if you don't have the money to buy a dedicated system rather than building two into one and even sometimes is the better option than building two systems

I agree with NZ Gamer by using teamviewer, but teamviewer does have a habit of saying that your using it for a buisness rather than personal use

I personally use Anydesk. The interface can be a little weird, but it works really well for personal use.

An idea that I just had was couldn't I just unplug my windows SSD and associated HDD when not in use and leave only the SATA cables for the NAS in?

if your computer wasnt on than that would be possible, but if it was turned on than it would need to be hotswappable which i dont think a boot drive can be hotswappable
