I have put together a couple of part lists together for my first PC build. They were based on the pcpartpicker build guides, but I have made some modifications. The main differences between list A and list B is that list a uses a Ryzen 5 3600X, 16GB RAM, and a 500GB SSD, whereas list B uses a 3700X, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. My questions to you are: 1) does it make sense to make the jump to the more expensive list B?, and 2) are there any changes that you think I should make to the list that makes more sense? Any help would be appreciated!

Here are some details for context:

  • I am in the US, but I don't like to waste money on parts I don't need
  • My max budget is $2000 - $2100
  • I plan to play some graphics intensive games, do CAD work, do video conferencing work, and join the LTT folding team.
  • I have 2 1080p 144Hz monitors, might get a VR headset later (at least a year later)
  • I already have all of my peripherals
  • This is my first desktop PC, I've been gaming on a laptop up to this point and it's time to get a real rig.

Also, here are the part lists:

[Build A]

[Build B]

B would be better for workstation type tasks thanks to the 2 extra cores, however my feedback would be to still invest in an M.2 in build B versus the SSD. Not much of a tangable difference for gaming between the two rigs aside from their single threaded performance differences and memory differences.
