Router File Transfer

Go to solution Solved by Kilrah,

Just turn on file sharing.

You'll get 100MB/s speeds assuming both PCs and the router have gigabit Ethernet.

I am looking for a way to transfer files quickly over from my laptop to my desktop computer as i use the laptop for school and often need to transfer several Gb of video files between them. I was wondering if there is a way of transferring the files through cat.6. I know that the file transfer should be able in theory to transfer as quick as 2 GP/s as both the computers are running m.2.

NOTE: my spec list is very outdated

Well your router will need to have gigabit ethernet too in that case. I was assuming it was 100mb.

that is not a problem, i was mainly wondering if i needed my own server for it as i am having a guy pull the ethernet cable through the whole house into my computer andif i did acyually need a server the wiring would be a lot more complicated.

You can plug the cable from one computer to the other one and you should go as fast as you ethernet card can go.

125mb/s if they are gigabit card

This might not work out of the box. You would need to manually configure IPs for both computers on the LAN network adapter, otherwise they won't communicate with each other as smoothly (might not find each other).

Well, here it is :

You have one computer that has data, you connect to the other computer directly and transfere file between each other

While they are both on the same network (connected to the same routeur to make it easy), you do "windows button on the keybord + r" then you type "cmd". You'll have a command prompt. You type "ipconfig" and search for your "ipv4 address" on both computer.

lets say :

 - "computer one" has the ip address 192.168.0.1

 - "computer two" has the ip address 192.168.0.2

To go to "computer two" from "computer one" you open windows explorer and type "\\192.168.0.2\c$\" you will be on the C:\ volume of "computer two". And then you can drag and drop you files.

true. I did not expect the router to be 1gb ethernet. So my previous post is not the right way to do it. (well it can be done that way but will be harder)
