I've been trying to solve a random black screen issue for about a year now, and I'm just at a loss. There doesn't seem to be any thing that will for sure trigger it, it is completely random. what happens is, randomly, the pc's screen will go black, all the lights, fans, keyboard etc, seem to still be on like nothing is wrong with the system. I have to hard reset the pc, and when it starts back up it runs fine. Sometime's it's a matter of hours, or a matter of days before it will happen again.

I originally had windows 7 ultimate, so I did a fresh install of windows 10 pro, the issue still persisted. I borrowed another 980ti from a friend for a while, and even used a different PCI slot, and still the random black screens occurred. I've just recently installed a new PSU thinking it was failing, and that hasn't solved the issue either. I've reconnected everything a few times to make sure there wasn't some sort of lose connection, I have re-seated the RAM, I've run memtest and windows memory diagnostic to ensure there wasn't some sort of RAM issue.

I've checked thermals on everything after gaming and have run furmark for several hours to make sure there were no issues there.

I'm getting no error codes from the boards Debug LED readout.

I think the only thing I have not tried is to update the MOBO bios, but I'm not certain that would even help.

I'm not sure what to do at this point, if anyone has any idea what could be causing this, you'd really be helping me out here.

asus rampage Iv Black Edition

How do you know it is your PC and not your screen? If all your peripherals still work, and you still hear sound etc, that would suggest to me it is your screen.

Next time it happens see if audio is still playing. You can also try to see if you can turn your PC off with the keyboard. (ex: Ctrl+Alt+Del, then Tab 7 times, enter, tab, enter) If you can shutdown the pc from they keyboard, still hear audio etc, that means the PC isnt frozen, just the display is.

The other option is if it is your graphics card. make sure you have the latest firmware for it, etc.

However it sounds like you tried a different card and still had the issue.

You can also check windows event viewer after you reboot and see if there was any critical errors or something causing it. I dont have much experiance using it though.

I should clarify, with audio during a black screen, like, if I'm playing a game, and it black screens, there will be audio like, background noise or whatever, but let's say I click to attack or do anything like that, there's no sound for that.

It's as if it locked up and the last sound will continue.

Or if I'm listening to music on YouTube the audio will play for a few but it does stop.

I've never really thought if it could be my monitor, but I'll try the first thing you had suggested and see what happens.

I'll also replace my display port cable just in case, but I'm uncertain if it will help.

I checked my windows event viewer from the last time it happened, and the only thing I could seem to find was it documenting me holding down the power button to reset it, and "not properly shutting down" or however it had worded it.

I will also check it again after it next happens.

the computer black screened again, and in event viewer i found this. and there's like 100 instances of that same error log, until i hard reset itwindowsevent1.thumb.png.9bd8a61d418e57c19e11f30095ed9ec1.png

until i had to hold the power button to reset it. I'm not sure what would cause this, as this was a fresh install of windows.

as tJuggernaut29 had suggested i tried to turn off the pc with the keyboard, but that did not work. So I'm still unsure what's causing the issue
