You're talking about using Optain as a cache drive.
If you use it as a cache then it will merge with your current drive and disappear from Windows.
You will not be able to access the drive within Windows.
You will have to enable RAID (does this by default) which will need 2 fresh drives. It will format your Optain and current OS drive then merge them (your size does not increase).
You will then need to reinstall Windows.

If you then wanted to reverse this later on then you will need to format Windows again to break the two drives apart.

Edit: You're correct. If you merge Optain with a hard drive then yes you will get a big performance boost after a few hours / days.
If you merge with an SSD then the performance boost won't be as high.

It's not a race to the bottom.
