1. Budget & Location

$3000; Alberta, Canada

2. Aim

Primarily software development for personal projects, and sometime video games. I also really like to tinker, hence robust. Looking for the 'most correct' UEFI implementation, with dual bios or at least a foolproof recovery method, if such a beast exists. I've had it up to here with Intel, and nVidia doesn't play nice on Linux, hence looking for a strictly AMD build. I need this machine to be as linux-friendly as possible. Looking for many threads, lots of ram. I already have a Samsung 970 Pro 512Gb SSD, but It's accumulated at least a couple of TB of writes, so I don't know how much life it has left in it. Sometimes I want to play games (one 1080p screen only). Not looking for state of the art, but I do want to keep up (thinking 1080 performance here, but this is negotiable). I would like this machine to be maintenance free for as long as possible, so no hard to replace moving parts, such as a pump. I'm also wanting to be able to do some machine learning on this machine, but afaik this shouldn't be a problem with a recent AMD card. It's a bonus if the machine is as small as physically possible. Looking for something recent, with a solid track record, and will perform for the foreseeable future in 90% of tasks. I do not personally care for RGB.

I am currently using 3x 1080p monitors

4. Peripherals

I have all the peripherals I need. Need at least 4 USB ports. Want thunderbolt

5. Why are you upgrading?
I bricked my Intel NUC8i7HVK and recovery is not an option.

I'm not really sure where to start given my requirements. I haven't custom built a machine in nearly a decade. I'm looking for some recommendations or a starting point.

If you want to do ML, AMD is sadly a no go. Their workaround solution (ROCm) doesn't even work with their newest Navi cards.

 

Also, Nvidia works just fine with Linux, I've been doing so for the past couple years.
