Windows on external drive

So i was running my pc off a external usb hardrive for a year coming up on 2. Today suddenly it stopped working i think i may have shut it off during an update without me knowing. Haven't been able to boot so i wiped the drive and proceed to try and reinstall windows. It tells me i cant download windows to a ubs hardrive i didn't have this problem the first time around. Thanks!

Try installing it to an internal drive. External drives are much slower on usb, unlike the faster Sata and NVMe. Maybe you didn't format the drive properly???🤷‍♂️

If i'm not mistaken, it was a limitation introduced with later releases.

Is this the error you're getting? I don't know if the solution above works or not.

What I would do is grab an old windows iso prior to this limitation, install it and update from there. Unfortunately, I can't recall on which build this happened.

Other tools used to offer this feature (such as Rufus, the first that comes to mind)  but dropped support for it for this reason
