External drive writes very slow

I am trying to copy some large files over to an external HDD (Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Touch 2.0 TB) but am suffering from abominable write speeds. We're talking around 300 KB/s here. 

A few things I've already checked:

It's plugged into a 3.0 port

I've tried both windows and linux

 

 

When looking at the transfer speed readout, the speed oscillated between about 7 MB/s and 300 KB/s. In task manager the average response time of the drive goes from 0 to 1000 ms constantly. I have no idea what this implies.

Edit: Tried copying some different files, no improvement.

Try bigger file size instead of 16mb.

Writing small files takes longer than a big file.

That was the largest size I could use while having the test finish in a reasonable amount of time. 

I am trying to write several hundred 2-3 gb files, and write speeds are still slow.

something wrong with your diskmark, the lowest i can go is 50mb, and i'm in version 6.

The diskmark isn't really the main problem- I'm worried about writing the actual files, 300KB is the speed reported by Windows.

If you can replicate the problem in another pc, i suggest you return it for service / replace.

Bad 4K alignment? Try USB 2.0 too. And different PC.

Strange fix- orienting the drive vertically brought the speed back up. The drive did get wet some time ago, and though I assumed it had dried out, there might still be a small droplet in there which is messing with things. I'll get it replaced.

the motor had gone bad, if it's still covered return it asap.
