I have had problems with my internet connection for a couple of months, but now it is worse than it used to be. I thought that the issue was with my modem, so I had that changed. Then I tried to remove the extension cable that I had between the phone line and the modem, but that didn't help either. According to my isp the connection up to our house is fine, but I have had mixed messages about what they can detect after that.

I have started to think that the problem might lie with my computer. I have noticed the connection dropping on other devices as well, but never as often, and for much shorter periods of times. It seems to have something to do with what I am doing as well, because according to the ping monitor I installed the connection is fine when I am not doing anything, but sometimes when i try to download something, it starts to look like this (and nothing happens):

(Ping to google.com)

The first part is how it looks when I try to download something, and a while after I turn it off, the connection reestablish itself. So my question is, could it be a hardware/software problem on my computer?

I am running windows 8, and I am connected to the modem via a wire.

EDIT: We have had the connection box thing exchanged, and the splitter cable exchanged, and that didn't help.

I have found out that if I set a youtube video on auto refresh, so it constantly keeps downloading something, it actually helps with the connection. When I try to watch a twitch stream when the network is acting up, the stream doesn't load if I am not also loading a youtube video at the same time. Weird, but works :/ I thought this might give someone an idea on what might be the problem, as the symptoms are so weird. The issue is also on all the computers in my network, both wired and wireless connection.

You can try re loading your LAN and WLAN drivers. Also, how can you connect to your modem from your laptop, unless it is a modem/router combo? Modems are not usually used to connect directly to a PC. What modem do you use? Also what wireless/ethernet adapter are you using?

It is a combination of a router and a modem from technicolor (TG799TSVn v2). I have tried to do more of the same stuff just now, and I am all but certain that it is something iffy on my pc :S

The network thingy on my pc is called Realtec PCIe GBE family Controller if that has anything to do with anything (it is built in to my motherboard)

Could you be more specific about which drivers it is that I should try to update?

  • 10 months later...

As the issue is on all computers in your network, I don't think it's driver related.

Have you tried to reset your Router?

Have you tried using a VPN? Cyberghost is a good free one, it's worth a shot.

I tried to both reset, and get a completely new router, so doubt it is that, but haven't tried a vpn, will test that out!

Edit:Tried the cyberghost service you suggested, but sadly that did not help with the problem. :( My guess is that it is an isp problem, but i don't know how to prove it/what to say to the isp since they apparently can't figure out what is wrong...
