My computer is about 4 years old and I'm starting to feel its age in some games for example in Far Cry 5 I am barely able to push 60 with drops on low settings 1080p and the main game I play Rust is averaging 70 to 80 at the beginning of a

wipe while dropping down to as low as the 40s later on.

Specs are as follows:

i5 6400

16 GB Ram 2400Mhz (2x8)

GTX 1060 3gb

128gb SSD 1Tb HDD

500 watt PW

I want to upgrade my computer for gaming performance, light editing, music production and try to future proof it. I was wondering if I should be upgrading the processor or graphics card for more performance.

If I were to upgrade my processor I will upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 5 3600, changing out my motherboard for an MSI mortar and buying a new ram kit that will run at 3600Mhz. On the other hand, If I were to upgrade my GPU it will most likely be 2070 Super.

I was also wondering if I were to upgrade my processor to a 3600 switch my motherboard to an MSI mortar and switch out my GPU for a 1660 Super, would my Ram running at 2400 Mhz affect the 3600 performance poorly and if it would even be worth doing?

P.S. I have around 300$-500$ as my Budget

Thanks.

A gpu upgrade will offer more of a benefit but an RTX 2070 Super performance will be held back by an I5-6400.

DDR4-2400 would impact gaming performance a bit. But the improvement offered by the better cpu would be far more than the memory speed penalty.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

So would switching to a 3600 and getting a 1660 Super instead of a 2070 Super make more sense or should I just go with the 2070 Super and upgrade the processor later on.
