Tracking down an errant startup process

Go to solution Solved by xAcid9,

Did you check Task Scheduler?

So I have a system in my possession that is Win10 home. Somewhere upon startup, is a process that goes out to the web, and downloads an updated Bios for the system (a laptop), then displays a dialogue box asking me to upgrade the bios.

Ok, fair enough. But the program either doesn't work right, or crashes silently, because if I choose "upgrade" nothing seems to happen, and every time I start the system up, I have to go through this again. If I choose "cancel", well, the same thing happens.

I have found the file (located in Windows\temp folder) and deleted it, but it returns upon next boot up, and I go through the attempted process all over again.

So in an attempt to find out what's causing this process to download and spawn, I dug through the registry and msconfig/startup, found what I thought was the offending file that did this, and deleted it.

But upon reboot, I get a cmd box and an error message stating that the updated bios program could not be found, so something is still reaching out to the internet and trying to get this program. Trouble is, I'll be damned if I can find out what it is. I'm assuming it's a service that triggers this, but nothing jumps out as being obvious in the Services list.

So what I'm looking for is some sort of program that tracks and shows a detailed list of what goes on when windows starts up, so I can find the offending process/service, and kill it, because this is pretty annoying.

I've tried Hijack This! and it didn't shed any light.

Suggestions? Advice?

I'd check in BIOS to see if there is something there triggering the action.

And you can try CCleaner to see about orphaned registry entries calling on that file you deleted.

Thank you, I did look there, but the BIOS is extremely basic, so nothing doing there.

Haven't they been compromised? Has that issue been fixed, I dunno, I have never used them.

Ding ding ding ding!

We have a winner!

Thank you for this, I'd missed one task, which just so happened to be the offending one.

Thank you again, this was driving me bonkers!
