So my PC has a 3900x, 32 GB of 3600Mhz GSkill ram and I edit off of a Samsung 970 EVO SSD and GTX 970.

My Footage is MP4 30000kbps 29.97 FPS 1080p Canon DSLR footage.

For some reason however timeline performance is abysmal providing I drag the playhead. However when dragging the playhead line itself it is smooth.

No matter if they are preview files or not...it still responds slow.

What is your experience like?

First step enable CUDA (https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2013/09/13/enabling-cuda-for-the-mercury-playback-engine-in-the-macbook-pro-retina/),  use proxies if need. These steps are a start and there are other things like tweaking ram usage and other GPU settings.  32Gb of ram is not a lot when it comes to video editing since abobe can eat up a tone of ram if you allow it to. I upgrade from 32 to 64 GB and altered the amount of ram the software could use. there were huge gains after the upgrade. CUDA being enable and using the studio version of the driver (if your GPU has one) makes a huge difference in regard to your GPU.
