Network Credentials for Homegroup?

Go to solution Solved by TheProfosist,

do you know where I can learn to do this?

Its quite easy to do. Leave the homegroup, go into home group settings and set it to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers". Give your users passwords if they dont have them, also if you still want it to auto login thats still possible with a password you just have to set it up later. Then in Control Panel > Folder Options > View all the way at the bottom there is "Use Sharing Wizard", uncheck that. Like restart once maybe if something asks you to. The just go to any folder and right click > Share With > Advanced Sharing > Click Advanced Sharing in the Pop-Up and have at it. All youll need to know then is the name of the PC which you can a find and change if you want in Control Panel > System.

So I had to re-install windows on my pc and now I can't access the shared files on my HTPC. It tells me to enter my network credentials which I never set up . Please help, all of my music and video is stored on my HPTC and I need to access it.

...?

Homegroup only requires a password to connect that is randomly generated or created by you.

This isn't homegroup. That's a share. Meaning it should be whatever you were using before. So your normal username/password.

No. When you made the share, you had to configure it's permissions. If you accessed it without credentials, then it is allowing everyone to connect which means you shouldn't have to put in credentials at all, so you didn't do that.

You don't "Set up a password for the files". When you make the files, the permissions are configured to allow the owner (that'd be you) to mess with them.

It should just be whatever account you were using to connect to it originally. So say I have the username Tremor and the Password IsAwesome. And that's the account I used to access them before re-installing Windows. Then I would use those credentials to access them now. Even if I'm on a different account on the computer I was using.

Actually I was going a different direction with it, but that might work too.

The way I shared the files was to just go under properties and set sharing so that everyone can have full access. I never set users or credentials.

through homegroup.

See, you are still losing me there.

If it is through homegroup, you have to add your computer to the group. To do that, you need the homegroup password. That can be obtained from any computer already in the homegroup. Such as the HTPC. So log onto the HTPC and grab the password from there in Windows Homegroup.

Get on a computer that has access to the drives/folders you want. Or the HTPC.

Navigate to the drives/folders.

Right Click each one and repeat this process.

Click Properties

Click the Sharing tab.

Click Advanced Sharing.

Check the "Share This Folder" box.

Name the share whatever you want.

Change the permissions to whatever you need.

Click Ok.

Go to a PC you want to have the share.

Go to Computer.

Click "Map Network Drive".

Type in the name of the computer and the name of the share in this format: \\NameOfComputer\NameOfShare

Assign it to whatever drive letter you want it as. Be sure to check the "Connect with different credentials" box if you want to do that. Otherwise it will try and use ones you've used before or your current login's credentials.

Type in your credentials and hit Ok.

Now you have the drive/folders connected to your computer and can access them freely.

I have it set to everyone can read and write. It is saying i need permission to access the pc not the drive.

Do you have a password set for the account your using as I mentioned in my directions?

Use the administrator account on the HTPC's credentials.
