PC freezes and mouse is still responsive

Datta96

Over Christmas i upgraded my PC build because i was getting random blue screens and some of the parts couldn't handle today's games. I can now say that the blue screens have stopped but now i have a new problem.  Now the screen will freeze while I'm gaming and it aslo happens randomly sometimes. The weird part is that the mouse is still responsive and keyboard shortcuts (like ctrl + atl + delete) do work but once you select the Task Manger it wont appear, but a blank space in the bottom toolbar appears where that application was to be shown. First i thought that it was that the GPU couldn't handle the new 1440p 144Hz monitor (it couldnt), so i changed the monitor to be at 1080p 60Hz, same as my old monitor (same thing happens with the old monitor), but it still happens. The only parts i reused from the old build are the GPU, the Storage (but this time i added a M.2 drive that currently inst being used) and the PSU. Ive tried both RAM sticks and it still freezes. I've updated the drives on every new part, updated the MB BIOS, reinstalled Windows 10, and now i dot know what to do.

Pc Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

CPU AIO: Corsair H100i RGB Platinum

MB: ASUS TUF gaming x570-PLUS (wi-fi)

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 X16)

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 8GB G1 Gaming

Storage: 1TB & 2TB HDD, Samsung 250GB SSD and Samsung 500GB M.2

Sounds like an app crashing but the computer itself not crashing.  This may be locked out, but in some cases hitting Cyril+alt+del will throw you into task manager and you can kill the app without having to reboot.  May not work as well as it used to though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

The problem is that in that state I can click on Task Manager but it never appears.

I would recommend doing routine computer maintenance to see if this fixes the issue.

  1. to clean pc  https://privazer.com/en/
  2. Perform antivirus scan
  3. no conflicting software, like voodoo blocking app etc.. https://voodooshield.com/
  4. optimize you computer, disable unneeded startup programs in task manger, lookup other optimizations like turn off visual effects in windows https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6377-change-visual-effects-settings-windows-10-a.html, trim ssd or defrag hdd, use disk cleaner with admin selected
  5. use software like process hacker (https://processhacker.sourceforge.io/) to see where you pc usage is going and troubleshoot

there are many other step but this is a start
