Overclocking Sapphire Hd 7870 Xt [help]

Mukessh

Hey guys , I'v just tried to overclocking my Sapphire HD 7870 XT(Tahiti LE) , and saw something abnormal . Look at the screen shot below . I overclocked it from 925mhz to 1000mhz and the MSI Afterburner shows 925 while FurMark shows 1000mhz . What am I doing wrong ?

gotta love norton, telling you what you already know since 1989  ;)

as to the issue at hand.

from the msi afterburner graph it looks like it went up to 1000mhz for a second, then it throttled down to 925 (ik you said 975,but in the image it has it at 925,I think)

could be that furmark is simply believing the drivers attempt to go to 1000mhz,whereas msi afterburner is telling you what actually happened.

I'd consult another application and see what it says,I go by majority rules,so if 7 applications tell me my cpu is at 40C,but 1 says that it's at 501C I'd probably trust the other 7. :P

so yeah consult another program like hwinfo and see what it says.

For Sapphire Tahiti LE, only TriXx 4.6 will work.

Oh wait.. maybe because you didn't increase Power Limit. Also Furmark is not a good way to test overclocking.. try Valley/Heaven benchmark instead.

What does the Power Limit do ?

It will Increase/Decrease your GPU TDP.

Example, 7870XT TDP limit is 185W. When overclocked and underload, it need to use more than 185W so you need to increase the TDP limit to prevent that to happen, else it will revert back to stock clock or 2D clock.
