What GPU to get?

mattdmg

Hello currently I am running a r7 3700x, 16GB CL14 3200mhz, and a GTX 1070 on a 1080p 180hz G-sync monitor.

I have been hitting 60fps on most games but I want a little more. Since I play a lot of competitive FPS I want a little more than 60 since I value high refresh rate over visuals. I just got RDR2 on Steam and I am only able to average about 35 fps on max settings. I think that's the type of game I would want to experience with a lot of eye candy.

To increase FPS which GPU should I go for? I have really only been looking at the RTX Super cards. I have been thinking between a 2070 S and 2080 S

35fos sounds really low. Acc. to benchmarks you should be looking at at least 50fps with a 1070. Are you sure you are not running some kind of SSAA?

2080S would be a very decent upgrade though, thats for sure.

You probably shouldn't be playing on ultra settings for starters if you care about refresh rate as even the 2080ti won't get you near your cap at 1080p in some games like RDR2. Find settings that still look good but perform better. Ultra is for screenshots, High is for gaming that still looks good.

If you still feel that you need an upgrade, you're going to have to go with at least the 5700XT or 2070 Super to get a significant upgrade. The 2080 Super is terrible value and will largely go to waste at 1080p, so you really shouldn't be going higher than the previously aforementioned price tier.
