I'm looking at my future gaming setup and have a question for everyone.  The RTX 2070 laptop version is clocked 10-15% slower than the desktop version.  The performance hit for an EGPU seems to be 10-15%.  Will I get decent performance with my netbook running a i7-8565u with an $7-800 for an EGPU or should I just sink the $2k on a new laptop next year?

the more powerful a gpu in a laptop, the worse its battery life will be, most 2070 laptops have a charge time of less than 2 hours, it's in your favor to run an egpu.

The battery life issue aside, I will be traveling with a netbook anyway.  The gaming laptop would be in the checked bags.

Benefits of egpu allow for better and more monitors, as well as freedom form upgradeability. So you don’t have to limit yourself to a 2070, you could go up to a 2080 ti. After 2070 though, heat becomes a major issue and you get much less performance compared to the desktop variants.

since you’re carrying a netbook, if it supports thunderbolt you wouldn’t need a second laptop for gaming at all, just the egpu

EGPU will probably fit your needs best for the lower price. Probably won't need to spend that much either, unless you need the card for Adobe Premiere or something... (a 5700XT should be about the same performance as a 2070 Super when they're both externals)
