Possible gpu, CPU bottleneck

the reason you're getting tearing is because youre pushing way more fps than your monitor can handle.

what kind of fps are you getting in the games youre playing? this will help figure out if you really need a cpu upgrade or not.

to help with the tearing you can limit your fps closer to your refresh rate. (set it slightly higher though just to compensate for fps spikes)

I haven’t been into tech as much as I was when a few years back and my gtx 1050 ti is finally not doing it for me. I mostly do 3D work in cinema 4d and unreal engine. I also game as well. I went and ordered a rtx 2070 super since I figured it’s a decent upgrade for the price. However as I wait I’m starting to worry that I’ll be bottlenecking my gpu. My cpu is an i5 6600k @3.5ghz.  I’m not sure if it will bottleneck or not which is why I’m here. If so with that gpu would a i5 9600k 6 core processor be the right way to go? Or should I be fine?

it depends on what resolution & fps youre trying to play at. From what I've heard the 9600k is hitting 100% usage at 1080p with the 2070. If youre gaming at 1440p or higher you may be ok with a 9600k, but i would reccomend a 9700k or ryzen 3700 if you want to avoid bottlenecking at higher fps 1080p

nothing to worry unless, you see shutters and low avg fps when gpu under 100% load

I have no reason to play in anything higher than 1080p. I’m assuming the CPU I have now is not viable anymore?

Honestly because I don’t know all of the risks involved at all with overclocking it. I overclocked my gpu fine but I wouldn’t even know where to start with my cpu

As long as you dont go way overboard with the voltage and keep your temps in check, there is in my experience nothing to worry about.

Maybe even try to keep the voltage stock and just see how far your CPU can go with that.

I normally cap my FPS at 90 for the games I play. I don’t really play anything that demanding but let’s say for example if I’m playing battlefield 4 or ark survival I get screen tears a lot with fast movements. Ark I Litterally never get over 60 let alone 60 FPS at all. Battlefield on the other hand I avg about 70 to 80 on high settings and I get screen tears as well.

As most intel CPUs you should aim below 70C while gaming, if you got a heavy OC and not over 90 while running a stress test like Prime95

For a light overclock like youre aiming for, go for something like 60C during gaming and about 80c during stress test.

Keep in mind your cooler will be important during overclocking, dont try to force stuff with the stock heatsink.

I don’t have a very good cooler so I’ll have to watch that. Honestly I thought 60 would be pretty low. The cooler I’m using is a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

hmm. ok.

my personal recommendation. I think your current cpu is borderline good enough and you'd be more satisfied if you upgraded to a better monitor 1st. Something 120hz + with either freesync or g sync. and i really would reccomend 1440p over 1080p especially since the 2070 super has the power to push it.

No I play on just one the others are for multi tasking like chrome or discord.  I’d like to upgrade all three but trying to get all three for 300$ with a good hrz sounds unrealistic. So I’d probably only be getting one for that money

no problem. happy I could help.

go for the monitor 1st, you'll have a much better experience there. just know that your current cpu will probably be running at 100% and you wont be getting 144 fps in everything because the cpu bottleneck but it should be pretty close. your overall experience will be much better though. if you want those extra fps so you're steady at or over 144 + in most games you will have to upgrade your cpu. If you find the upgrade necessary a 9600k or 3600 would probably be ok, but 9700k or 3700x would be the smarter option. or you may be perfectly happy with just the monitor.

(just a little what to expect next)

best of luck
