Planning on upgrading.

Hello, 

I'm Rishanthan, Rish for short. I have an i5 2550k clocked to 4.2 ghz with passmark of 8680 (or somewhere there, I don't remember the last 2 digits). I plan on upgrading to a better cpu, my budget is $100 to 150 USD, I prefer price per performance and if its cheaper it's better. I use it mainly for gaming and light video editing.

why is the overclock so low?

have you even touched the voltages? Or monitor it?

Got 4.2 at 1.255V and then tried 4.3 all the way to 1.285v at llc set to medium. And still bsod. 

Reported in software or BIOS? what you set in the BIOS is only true with 0 current draw which never happens, that's why you need to monitor it with software like HWinfo64

 

2nd gen can also take 1.4V no problem with enough cooling

Both. I use hwinfo, cpuz, and cpuid hwmonitor. I use prime 95 as my stability checker. I use a Cooler master Hyper 103 atm.

so this will be the cheapest thing to upgrade. Honestly the 2600k isnt that cheap, so better ooler for better overclock shall do.

But will that make a huge difference tho? I tried 4.5 ghz at 1.31V just now. And the moment it hit 100% cpu usage, it bsod.

As much difference as your overclock. I assume here that your memory or GPU isnt the bottleneck

I play some simulation games and plan on livestreaming as well. The memory is in dual channel.
