Hey, I've been carousing around looking for a new CPU.  In my current system, I have an i7-3770k paired with a GTX 1070ti.  In fps games like overwatch and apex, but honestly mostly overwatch, sometimes I'll get drops to the low 100s and even 90s randomly.  I know a lot of new CPUs just came out, and I'm really not in-the-know about which one is best to go with for gaming and budget.  I think I want to completely keep my old system intact, minus the 1070ti which I'll put into the new system with the new CPU, but I think knowing which CPU to get and then looking at motherboards will be the best way for me to go about it.  I have been comparing the 8700k and the 9700k and the 9900k and ks, but i'm not sure which will be optimal for price, longevity, and performance.  The performance for all of them for gaming seems pretty close to me, as far as youtube comparisons go, but right now, what would you recommend?  I have 300-500 to put into this, and i really want something awesome.  I was watching Dafran play Overwatch at a consistent 250fps with his new system and it blew me away lol.  Thanks for the help !

Edit: even a good CPU + mobo recommendation would be great

Is your CPU overclocked? Might give you the performance you're after.

Otherwise, a Ryzen 5 3600 will do the job quite nicely for you.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Hey yeah I tried to do some very slight overclocking. I followed a couple guides but couldn't really push it that much harder that it already was.

I've never had an amd processor. Which intel CPU would that be comparable to, and are they reliable?  I know that with the news on the new intel and amd processors, it looks like amd is dong something right. If I were o want to stick with intel which would you recommend?

amd just blew intel out with the 3950x release, for just overwatch, i'd be looking for the r5 2600/2700 for 100/150usd respectively for a budget build. If you wanna spend more, then intel still has a 5-10% lead on 1% lows in some games (not worth it imho, coming from someone who leans intel), a 3600 is basically a 8700, the 2600 is 10%~ slower.

The only situation i'd go intel atm is the 9700kf+z390 elite mobo for pure gaming

I would recommend AMD as well.   Aside from a few edge case scenarios where max FPS 1080p gaming is concerned, dollar for dollar, AMD just has a better product right now.  Intel just fell apart this year in my opinion especially considering that every other day, they seem to be announcing some new security flaw or another with their processor.  Honestly, whether it is justified or not, I just don't feel safe using Intel any more because of it.  Also for productivity such as streaming, video editing, etc, you just can't beat an AMD right now as they just flat out trounce Intel in the productivity department.

As far as the AMD line up goes.  The 3600 is probably the best value if budget is a major concern though I tend to really like the 3700x just because it comes with 2 more cores which eventually, sooner or latter will make a different.  I just think the 3700x the better option right now for the long term but it is $130 more expensive without giving you $130 more performance, at least for current gen games and with that $130 you could buy better RAM or an upgraded MB or something, so there is that to consider.

Ok, so it looks like the 3700x is $327.99 on Amazon, and the i7 9700kf is $329.99.  I found a video just comparing the i7s on Youtube, and there's a part comparing just Overwatch, and it looks like the performance for most of these is relatively the same mostly between the 8700k and the 9700k.  So I could start looking for black friday deals now for something.  I checked a video comparing the 3700x to the 9700kf and it looks like the 9700kf has higher cpu usage during gaming, with 5-15ish more frames, but the 3700x is better for multitasking.  I don't know if I'll be doing any overclocking - probably not for a while at least.  So 3700x seems great to me.  What motherboard would pair with it ?  and thanks again for the help ! EDIT: just seeing microcenter has a deal on 3800x which makes it come out to $300 if I get a motherboard with it.

At this point unless you're chasing very high fps at 1080p with settings tuned down I would absolutely go for a budget 2700x build with a b450 tomahawk and a 5700xt.

3700x is great too, but it's filly twice as much and not twice as fast.

Yeah, I like playing shooters mostly at high fps for the 240hz monitor and reduced input lag so i turn things down like Overwatch right now.  But I was watching Dafran's stream and he has everything on ultra and 250fps consistent which is absolutely nuts, so if I can get a solid 240-250fps and I have to turn down some settings, that would be totally fine - but I would also like a system that will last a number of years where it stays pretty solid, so 3700x/3800x look good.
