Hey guys,

I really want to make a MC server for my friends and I.

i was thinking about cheaper solutions to as to save money instead of building a dedicated pc.

I had an idea recently though, which was to run 2 vm's on linux, one with windows 10 and one with linux.

I would then use the windows 10 one for my gaming and stuff, whilst the linux vm ran the server.

I would only dedicate 2 cores (of a 6 core cpu) and 4 gigs of ram (of 16 gigs) to the mc server.

My question is: if I were to set up these 2 vm's, could I turn one of them off easily and give the computer's resources to the other vm.

also would this be a viable solution?

do you know if the amount of resources used on a mc windows server are controllable

I know the amount of ram is but i'm not sure about cpu uses.

I just realised that the server is only single threaded so it will only use one core at a time

You should use windows because minecraft runs faster FPS in it if you are planning to play it aswell since graphics drivers arent passed through to the windows VM from linux unlkess you are using a Quatro GPU or something like that. Then run your linux server with VirtualBox and see improvements in network speeds, host your forum with an Apache lamp stack, as well as not require the need to defragment it.
