wierd keyboard issue

first off, this is a software issue now hardware. 

The problem is that my number row on my laptop keyboard is unresponsive. all keys from 1 to 0 do not do anything. I am able to type the numbers because I have a numberpad which is functional. secondary functions like exclaimation mark and parentheses do not work either. this is incredibly frustrating because I cant play games which rely on the numberkeys to perform functions.

this is a software issue for sure because on the lock screen everything does work. once I log in, it stops working. also, sometimes, when I restart the computer they will magically work for a few hours and then stop again.
