I picked up a lightly used Server that I am planning to use for some home storage and networking.  It came with a fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2.  I am planning to use it for security cameras and a data backup for my photos that are currently around 700 GB of data.  It has support for RAID, but the controller inside can only handle 2TB drives.  I was hoping to change this so I could put some 6TB or larger drives in it.  It has the 4 hot swap bays in the front as well as redundant power supplies and GB Ethernet.  I have a huge library of VHS and was going to also use the server to record all this data.  I want to run Blueiris for the cameras as well as a few other applications that are Windows 10 compatible.  My two questions are, what would I use to upgrade the RAID to support more than 2TB per drive? Would installing Windows 10 be a hindrance over installing Windows Server 2016? What are some other things that I should do before I start writing a bunch of data to the machine and using it?  I haven't done anything with it yet since I don't want to setup the RAID and load it with data and then have to figure out how to pull it all off and write it back again.

Thanks!

Do you want hardware or software raid. H200 if software, h700 if hardware.

Do you have a seprate boot drive? Id get a ssd for boot + vms.

Id install a hypervisor(like proxmox, esxi, xcp-ng, or hyper-v server(windows server for vms only, its free too)

Which is better? Software or hardware to run raid?  I will add a separate boot drive for added redundancy.  So are you saying then to run windows server and then add a Hypervisor to it?  If so should I upgrade to the Windows Server 2016?

Thanks

might as well run win server 2019 if you running win server.

WIndows serer has a hypervisor built in(hyper-v), you can use that or anouther hypervisor.
