I currently have a Ryzen 2700x build in a Phanteks Evolv X case. This case has a "Dual System" feature that allows me to install an ITX board in the top of the case. I would like to upgrade to a Ryzen 3000 series (maybe a 3850x) and use my 2700x for a NAS.

Phanteks sells a power supply splitter that will allow me to use my existing PSU to power both systems.

The only issue I see is the lack of GPU for my NAS build. I do not need GPU support for the NAS once everything is installed. I plan on installing the OS with my current GPU and then removing it once I install the NAS into my case. However, I am not sure if the system will boot without a GPU. I have read conflicting results online. Some people say that this will not work at all, some people say that it depends on the motherboard. My main question is, does anyone know of an AM4 ITX board that will boot without a GPU?

I will also be using my NAS to run docker containers (plex/sonarr/radarr).

Stuff I own:

Phanteks Evolv X

Ryzen 2700x

Corsair HX850

WD Black 500GB NVMe SSD

Stuff I will be buying:

2x8gb ddr4 (Nothing fancy, just some memory to run docker containers)

ITX board ???

4x8tb or 4x10tb WD Red (depending on what kind of deal I can get)

Noctua NH-L9i (black) with AM4 adapter

Also, sorry if this is more of a technical question than a build request. Feel free to recommend any changes.

Do not use the same power supply for both system.

You don't need anything special for the NAS itself, just buy some NAS drives and install freeNAS.

You can get GT 1030s and other low power GPUs from ebay for under $40

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Phanteks makes a splitter specifically for this purpose: http://www.phanteks.com/PH-PWSPR.html

850W is plenty for both systems. Curious as to why this would be an issue?

FreeNAS is the plan, looking to get a good deal on the drives. Only have space for 4.

As for GPU. In this case, there is no way to mount a GPU in the dual system location without running a PCI riser cable around the back of the case and into the vertical GPU location. This would required probably 3ft of PCI riser for a GPU that I don't intend to use. It doesn't make sense to me.

Thoughts?

In case of a failure or surge it's just better to give each system it's own power supply. Can just mount a FlexATX unit anywhere for the 2nd PSU as it's load isn't very high.

Could sell the R7 2700X for an R3 2200G or 2400G if there's no chance for a GPU. Though you're likely to only get like $175 for it at this point.
