Personal PC upgrade help

tatunts

Hello guys! First post here, thanks for having me.

I really need to upgrade my rig and just bought a reasonably priced RTX 2080 Ti with 11gb ram from Zotac (ZT-T20810F-10P), could not miss that opportunity.

Now I need to figure out if my current configuration is up to use this GPU, if I need to change anything else to avoid bottlenecks,

This is my current config:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
  • Kingston HyperX FURY 8GB 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM (KHX1866C10D3/8G) x2, total 16GB
  • Z97X-Gaming 7 motherboard

Do you think I need to change anything? I wish I could still use the CPU but not sure if both RAM and motherboard would create bottlenecks or even if its compatible with the GPU I've just bought.

Thanks!

Depends on the title.  Some titles demand more cores than you have, so overclocking the CPU will give you more headroom on that GPU in both scenarios (if it needs more cores or not)

Id first see how it works together, first, however since you already have it to then make the decision if you like the results of your upgrade.

It depends.

  • What games are you playing? Do they need more CPU or more GPU power?
  • What resolution is your monitor? FHD will need more CPU power and 4K more GPU power.
  • What frame rate is your monitor? 144Hz in any modern game would be a struggle with a 4790K.

The RAM and motherboard won't be a bottleneck, unless you have scientific calculations that need really high RAM speed.

There are plenty of circumstances where the 4790K pairs well with a 2080 ti, all that's left is to see whether or not your standards are met by its performance

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Depends on ur monitor.

if ur aiming for high FPS figures ull need a new CPU.

If ur aiming sub 120 though .., like 4k resolutions, ur fine.

Would suggest you OC that CPU though. 4.5ghz should be an easy target.

Wow thanks a lot guys! So many responses on such a short time, this place is really awesome.

Since I don't play very often on my machine, I really want to prepare it for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption II and plan to start on VR early next year. For now I mainly use it for video editing, 3d modeling an a bit of gaming (GTA V, CS-GO, Just Cause 4).

So I think the CPU is OK then, just a little OC and it should be fine since I have an Intel water cooling system for it. I was mainly worried about the slow RAM and old motherboard.

I forgot to say: I use it on a LG 55SM8600 4K TV for playing games...

Do you think the current motherboard should be fine? No need for a faster PCI connection or anything else?

Thanks again!

It is already PCIe 3.0. PCIe 4.0 is only available with Ryzen 3 and not even supported by your GPU. Even if it was supported, it wouldn't need that much bandwidth. If you want high speed storage, then you might need a new motherboard, but you really don't need more than 1 GB/s (2x PCIe 2, your motherboards M.2 connection) for game loading.

Thanks mate. I have a dual SSD as RAID0 so that is enough speed for me.

This information set my mind at ease, I shall have a great graphics performance update since I am coming from a GTX 970.

Can wait to see those RTX effects :)

Thanks!

If you play in 4k resolution, there should not be that much of a bottleneck. The GPU will be really stressed so the CPU won't be an issue. Nevertheless, you should try to OC the I7 a little bit more, if you can. As @SolarNova said, 4.5GHz seems like a good number.

Be sure that the thermal paste is not to old for temperature issues.

Good luck.
