Xeon X3440

Go to solution Solved by Necrovarius,

Nevermind, looks like the seller found someone already. Bummer, oh well, I might just buy a prefab.

Hey all,

I saw a local listing on Facebook for a Xeon X3440 processor. I know the person selling it and I now they don't know enough about it because they are selling it for $12.

Here is my question, I wanna buy it, because I never had a server grade processor before. How expensive do you think it would be to build a server out of that processor, or should I move away from the thought due to old tech costs?

well... it's actually pretty cheap to just get some old servers from your local marketplace

but keep in mind and out of own experience, they can fail rather quickly sometimes

Yeah, I have had first hand of "Buyer Beware" but its more of a proof of concept, I have always wanted a server in my house. Not like a PC Server, but like a rack server that is non essential. I think it would be fun! Plus if I don't use it, I can probably sell it!

you can, i personally have had some fun with a ml350 g6 (dual 1366 xeon socket), but the board started bootlooping

Do you know, if I need a specific board type to go with xeon, or can I use any LGA1156 socket?

consumer boards can sometimes be a bit weird with xeons, some do and some don't work with it

server boards have wide documentation on the chips they support

@LukeSavenije Ive spent some time looking, but I really dont know what I am looking for. I know the socket type, but cant find a decent deal on a board, and each time I pull one up, its not on the compatibility list.

well, you can push your luck with getting something that isn't officially supported, but of course you have a risk with this
