I just got back from picking up another monitor and a new keyboard. I unplug my PC, move my monitors, connect them all back up, start the computer and it goes through the usual loading, keyboard lights up(normally does this few ms before the login screen appears), then just reboots, and keeps doing it. I did notice that the initial boot screen (the one that appears the second you turn on power) looks like a smaller resolution, but could be that it is normally like that.

Things I have done, that didn't work.

  • removed all new items. (also tried with only the power, keyboard, mouse and 1 monitor plugged in.
  • Removed all RAM and tried 1 at a time.
  • changed the graphics card, (unfortunately it didn't work, think it was damaged ages ago)
  • Tried to put in my Windows 8.1 install disc and it said it wasn't recognized

while it has rebooted about 20 times, once it did show Disk Read Error, that got me thinking it could be a SSD issue, its not even 2 months old yet (Samsung 840 Evo)

I am currently re-downloading windows 8.1 from the Microsoft site, and will try to boot that on a USB. If that doesn't work I will try to run Ubuntu from USB, try and move my files from my SSD and format it, then try again.

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? or what I could try to find out what it is ?

All replies are much appreciated.

I’ve had multiple issues with windows 8 and booting issues in the past, I’m on my 5th re-install !!!

The restarting loop is a common issue with windows 8, I managed to re-install from disk though.

Have u tried a different windows 8 disk ?

I’ve also had problems with windows 8 and raid set ups.

Have you tried disconnecting all your other drive and just booting with your ssd's plugged in ? Are your ssd's in raid?

I am using the Windows 8.1 evaluation (available on Microsoft website) I have just finished downloading another copy. creating a bootable USB now. If that doesn't work I will hook up the SSD with another system and copy the files I need, and then format the SSD.

No none of my drives are in RAID

Getting annoyed now.

re-installed windows, everything was fine, started installing the usual (hardware drivers, nvidia drivers) after that it needed to restart, so I restarted it. Then it happens again, loads windows but instead of the welcome screen it restarts.

Just realized that before I shut it down last time there were Nvidia updates...  Could that be causing it ?

Just running a few tests will report back with what I find.

EDIT:

Long story short,

  • Installed Nvidia beta drivers, = BSOD
  • Done the usual hardware tests and everything was running fine.
  • reinstalled windows twice, both time I also installed the nvidia beta drivers = BSOD
  • Reinstalled again, this time latest stable nvidia drivers (Non BETA) and everything is fine, restarted pc around 15 times, now been on for around 12 hours, and everything is still running smoothly.
