Hi everyone,

I've been thinking of upgrade my pc a lot lately, and I'm looking for some help/guidance. (I live in canada for reference).

My current setup is the following;

Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5

CPU: Intel i7 4970k

GPU: GTX 970

PSU: Corsair CX750M

Memory: 8 GB's of Corsair memory.

As it stands I'm trying to upgrade my build while trying to spend the least possible.

My Thoughts are the following;

Replace the Motherboard with a MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX.

Replace the CPU with a AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Replace Memory with 16GB's of DDR4 memory (Most likely corsair vengence).

Keep the PSU, and GPU.

Now, is it worth upgrading ? Are the suggestions I'm making worth the money? I'm currently debating trying to sell some of the hardware, and invest in a better GPU. Any suggestions?

Any suggestion, ideas, or criticisms are appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

If you're just gaming, you don't really need to upgrade all that much. Doubling your RAM (preferably with the same kit to fill in the empty slots) and getting a new graphics card like the RTX 2070 Super or RX 5700 XT depending on your budget would breathe new life into your system and be far more cost effective. The GPU effects gaming FAR more than CPU.

I would mostly like to get an overall FPS boost in all my gaming. I've been having to turn down the graphic qualities quite a bit. Overall goal is to be able to play games at 144z with a decent graphic quality.

Keep your CPU, upgrade to 16GB of DDR3, and upgrade your GPU to a 1660ti or better. Unless you're jumping to a 2080 or higher your CPU will still be fine for gaming.

Awesome!

I wasn't sure how well the CPU would preform considering the age.

I'll look into both your suggestions!

Thanks!

The quad-core i5's are starting to become an issue above the level of a 590/1660 as they introduce nasty frame stuttering and can't feed enough data to the GPU, but the i7's with hyperthreading are still holding on quite well and likely will continue to do so until games move beyond using 8 threads on a regular basis.

The 4790k is still a good CPU, like others have said slap a new GPU and upgrade the ram and you'll see a big improvement. In my personally opinion you should also OC the CPU as much as it allows you to. A 2060 Super would be a good GPU to pair with it, the 2070 Super and 5700XT will be be cutting it close unless you OC the CPU.
