So I've been trying to get this old game I play called FATE to start working on this PC. It runs just fine our my downstairs PC but on this one it will load up to 75% I'll hear the games music but when I check task manager it has stopped responding. I have checked the settings between the two PCs and I can't seem to find a difference. Only difference between the hardware is the PC with the issue has a 1070 while the other has a 1050 TI, and the problem PC has an i8-8700 while the other has the FX-8350. If anyone has any ideas I could try that would be a great help, thanks.

Have you tried reinstalling the game? If not, uninstall the game, reboot, install the game, and reboot again. If it still doesn't work, try running the game in Compatibility Mode. Right click the executable or shortcut, and click "Troubleshoot Compatibility". Then, let the wizard run, and try launching the game again. Also, does the game install all the dependencies like DirectX correctly, or do you have to install them yourself?

I've tried reinstalling the game multiple times already and the trouble shooter compatibility, along with just manually trying different service packs. I checked my DirectX settings and it says I have DirectX 12 installed. Could it be a compatibility issue due to the games age? (game was made back in 2004 for reference)

What in game settings are you running, if possible try and set it to run in a different aspect ratio or resolution prior to the game launching (some games allow you to change this from a file in the game folder) this can sometimes cause problems with older games breaking at larger aspect/resolution scales.

DirectX 9.0c would have been used in 2004. Just search Google for "directx 9 download" and go to the Microsoft download center. You should be able to install it from there. But honestly, the game is so old that it just might not work on certain hardware configurations. For example, I was trying to run Knights of the Old Republic, a game from 2003. Tried to run the game with a Radeon R9 290, didn't work. Upgraded to a Nvidia GTX 1080, worked perfectly fine. So it might just not work.

Thanks for posting this, you just reminded me of something. Go to the games settings or config file, and make sure Soft Shadows are turned off. This was an old feature that is not supported on new graphics cards.

Cant run DirectX 9 on a computer without WIndows XP, 2000, ect. Windows 10 is too new however the computer it works on also runs windows 10.

Check this out. Follow these steps and make sure you have Directx 9 already on your system.

Hmmm can't seem to find anything like that. Most on the files are .mbl which I can't open, text files on code, or .png images.

Are you installing the game through Steam or via disk? If you're installing the game through steam, the config file is located here:

%PROGRAMDATA%\WildTangent\FateSteam\Persistent\config.dat

Ah I found the file by searching for %programdata% alright I'll need a minute to look over these files.

The config file may be there, also try going to C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fate\Persistent\config.dat

Given what I know about file structure the config file could be there, if not just dig around all the game's folders and look for something called "config.dat"

I found the config file but I don't see anything about soft shadows. Theres stuff about the texture and resolution but nothing other than that.

Tried deleting that folder and when I launched game it did its one time "compressing textures" then the game loaded but same issue 75% loaded and not responding.

I found this solution. Try this and see if it works. It appears that the game has issues with the way Windows 10 handles display resolutions.

Unfortunately this did not work either. I had seen this fix before but had not been able to use it since I could never find the config folder.

I'm pretty much out of ideas. Again, it is possible that the game just won't work on that specific hardware configuration. The best advice I can give is just look around on Google for solutions.

try forcing the game to open in 1280 x 768 and force windowed mode VIA the .dat file, ive fixed some modern games not displaying properly like this, its worth a shot.
