Probably not worth it unless you can get a very very good price on that chip. Like under $50 USD.

Thats about what they go for.

im thinking of upgrading my cpu and was looking at a i7 2600k

how big of and boost should i see in streaming and gaming coming from a i5 2400

The performance difference is hard to nail down.  Average FPS will be similar, stuttering will be significantly reduced.  If you can get a Z77 motherboard for a reasonable price, you will also be able to overclock it from ~3.5ghz to 4ghz without really putting any effort into it.

The 3770 & 2600 are more or less the same performance wise. Obviously the 3770 is better but just very marginally.

Which brings the next point, as the socket is the same, you could also get the 3770 instead of the 2600.

However the performance increase will only be in games. For streaming (unless you are doing it with gforce experience, in which case the CPU does not really matter at all) you most likely won't see any improvements.

even for 2600/k $50 , not really worth it compared to used ryzen 1600/2600/1700

you just had to upgrade system earlier than planned

will the extra threads help with streaming

2600K at 50$ gives you the same performance as the 2400G.

Z77 boards can be had for ~$60, OP already has DDR3.

I never cared for streaming myself so I only have a wage knowledge - and it obviously also depends on what program you are using to stream and what games you are streaming - but in general, the answer should be: not really.

If you intend to stream on high bitrate, FPS and resolution you simply want as many physical cores as possible.
There is a 6core 12t CPU fit for your motherboard though -> https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/63697/intel-core-i7-3930k-processor-12m-cache-up-to-3-80-ghz.html

However I never really saw anything about this CPU other than intel made it, but if you are looking to stream and can only afford a new CPU fit for your current motherboard, this is probably the best you can get, if you can find one that is.

On a quad core the extra threads do indeed make a difference.  OP  likely does not have a GPU with great encoding capability seeing as the system has an i5 2400.

Agree, but you also consider the cost of the rest of the platform (mobo, DDR4). So maybe if it holds him over an extra year it might be worth it and put him in a better position for when Ryzen 4k launches for more options.

The best CPU you can find for less than ~$75.

2600k/2700k/3770k are the fastest CPUs for the platform, and they are all about the same performance wise.

You  will likely need a new CPU cooler as well, they use more power than the 2400.

There are several options depending on what you currnetly have.  If you have an OEM motherboard (Dell/HP/etc) and just want the cheapest way to make it faster... get the 2600k and cooler (~$90).  If the extra ~$60 for a motherboard with some overclocking features is in the budget, you can get that as well (~$170).

If you have a P67/Z67/Z77 motherboard already you just need to get the CPU and the cooler (~$90).  Even if it is an OEM board, you can OC using Intel XTU or other software.

Alternatively, you can get a GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti for ~$120 and use NVENC in OBS to take the video encoding load off of the CPU altogether. (likely the most effective choice price/benefit wise)

OH, almost forgot.

If you are one of the crowd that has recently started buying cheap OEM systems for gaming, you may need a new PSU.

Once you get into actually upgrading those systems beyond the most basic level, they dont make a ton of sense.  A case can be had for $20, a better MB for $60, a better CPU for $60, Better PSU  for ~$40.  By the time you have replaced all of these parts, you are only getting a HDD and RAM out of the old system, making it a horribly bad deal.
