Call Microsoft to have the key reset.

I think you can, when you try use it. Up to 4 users depending what package, try use it. If not do as WoodenMarker says, but I think you can contact them via Support ticket on their website.

Remember to have the site of your country origin. .uk .ca etc.

Microsoft knows there's a large community of custom built pcs and enthusiasts. The way keys work is they are registered with your components. Lets say you swap the mother board, it is technically a new pc and you will have to buy another key. HOWEVER Microsoft is generous and with a simple phone call and explanation they will let you use the same key back with the new components. Now I'm not sure how far this extends, like how many parts you can actually replace at a single given upgrade or in total before you really have to buy another key. But for the most part and quick phone call to microsoft and you can use your old key.

The key is like a password. Other people aren't supposed to see it anyway. It alone should be enough.

can you just do that???

I believe so.

for example, my School's boss pcs have the Win key sticker right on the side.... i could copy that down, say i want to disable that key and then use it for my self...
