Hi, I'm upgrading my GPU and need help checking cmopatability. For background it is an old Dell Vostro 260s with a 250W PSU, with i5-2400, 8gb ram and admdhd 6450.

So one requirement for the GPU is that it needs to be low profile, taking all power from the mobo as there are no PSU cables available. I am eyeing a GT 1030 Low Profile https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/GeForce-GT-1030-2G-LP-OC.html

Will this GPU work in my computer? The PCIe slot in the Mobo is a 16x Gen 2, but I am not sure whether it can handle this GPU, and whether I need to make any BIOS changes.

Regarding the power consumption, the 6450 had a 27w tdp, so I'm pretty sure the 1030's 30w tdp is fine even though it recommends a 300w psu.

Get something a little better than that, a 1030 is dogshit, perhaps a second hand 1050/1650/750 ti/460/550/560.

You should probably specify what you mean by a 550/560. A GTX 560/550 or RX560/550. If 550 you mean RX550 then that's no better than a 1030

No, I'm reccommending a GTX 550 in 2019.

You serious? A 1030 immensely outperforms a GTX550, while drawing immensely less power.

Forgot to mention that I don't want to upgrade the power supply. Also dont really need that much power in the first place.

Doyou think a 1030 will work?

If you don't plan to upgrade your psu then yeah, a 1030 is a great option.

My recommendation tho it to pony up and save 40 and get a used Rx570 and this https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Warranty-Power-Supply-100-N1-0400-L1/dp/B00LV8TZAG/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?keywords=Psu&qid=1568462544&s=gateway&sr=8-8

  • 1 year later...

in theory the pcie slot can provide 75W of power, a gtx 1650 with no external connector should work feeding off the pcie slot alone.
