Hello everybody, that's my first post in here. Sorry if my English it's not perfect, but I'm Italian. In fact I come here because nobody can help me in italian forum.

So, I need your help.

I need to assemble a server for one of my customer. Usually I always sell preassembled server, like Dell or Hp one, I have experience in assembling pc but personally I never build a server, and I have to admit that I don't have much experience in specific server components.

Anyway, I just try to put some parts together. Customer budget is around 3k (euros). The server will be used for files sharing, mail and stuff like that, in an office of about 20 person. I know that something "smaller" would work anyway, but he want something "powerful" that could last some years. So, here's what I choose:

CPU: Xeon w-2135

Motherboard: Asus WS X299 SAGE

RAM: Corsair vengeance 8x8Gb 3000 MHz

SSD: Samsung 970 Pro 1 Tb

HDD: 2x WD red 4 Tb in raid 0 for backup

CASE: Obsidian 750D (I can't use a rack case, because the customer doesn't have a rack cabinet)

COOLER: Noctua NH-D15

PSU: here's something particular. I was searching for a redundant power supply, and I found on Amazon the FSP twins 700, it has the standard atx form factor but with 2 psu in it, so if one fail, the other still work. And it's 80+ gold.

The VGA is already in possession of the customer, it's a quadro p4000

It's about 3k worth of stuff. It's all compatible? It's all good stuff?

I will be glad to hear your opinion about it and receive all the tips needed.

Thanks!

Asus does not list the cpu as compatible with the motherboard.

You might want to consider ECC memory. I'd also suggest going with 4x16GB memory modules to leave room for a non-replacement upgrade.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

That was what i've be worried about! I doesn't understand why a 2066 socket xeon doesn't work on a 2066 motherboard...and I also doesn't find any suitable motherboard for it. I was oriented to that Asus model because it has a plenty of nice feature.

An i9-9xxx would be suitable too? Does the Xeon have additional feature?

Without experience in server or components, I suggest that you just stay with a prebuild Supermicro or HP.

In fact was my first offer for him.

But, who knows why, he doesn't want anything preassembled. Time ago, I have to assemble like 10 pc for his office (awful experience ??‍♂️) and now he wants an assembled server too. I have to comply to his requests, so here I am searching for help

The big feature that Xeons offer is ECC compatibility.  I don't really think you need that for a file server, but then again I don't know all the details of the work for this  machine.

The other suggestions here might be correct.  For 3k Euro, you can buy a very nice, complete, plug in and go workstation with a warranty and support form the manufacturer.

I'd go that route.

I will try to insist on that way, hoping that he will change his mind.

Probably I'll go for a Dell PowerEdge T440, I can get it for a very nice price
