Hi there,

I have  WD 1 Tb, that when I installed Win 7 I made a partition of 200 Gb for the windows installation and the other partition for data, backup, etc.

My question is, when I tried to install Win 8.1 didn't let me, said that the partition that I wanted to install wasn't GPT and for this reason I couldn't install. For my knowledge I have to erase all the partition of the disk to be able to install Win 8.1 right? Or do I have a way to only modify that partition with GPT and then install win 8.1 and preserve all the data on the second partition of data?

you will still have your data in a windows.old folder so try that if you can

I converted a whole drive to gpt before without losing any data. I would recommend you to back up before you do it. But my drive was only one partition so it may be a different process to convert if you have more than 1 partition on a drive (not sure if it acts as one partition in Linux but I think it is because the person had multiple partitions:http://sdnalloh.com/converting-win7-from-mbr-to-gpt/

Thanks, I'm going to have a close read on the subject and then decide. Most probably is to backup all, and install Win 8.1 like always

I have read the link that you send me, and it's a little elaborated process. If was to upgrade from Vista to 7 I could make the effort, but from 7 to 8.1, I think I'm going to make backup of things and install from scratch like always do. It's more efficient these way!

Thanks for the support!
