100% GPU Usage causing dropped frames

I've been noticing random frame drops whilst gaming, I decided to look at my gpu usage when these drops are happening. It normally sits around 95% but when the usage hits 100% the game's performance takes a massive hit and stays at around 20 fps until I tab out and wait for it to drop then tab back in.

Very weird issue, I have an MSI RTX 2080 and i7 9700k. Using MSI after burner and geforce experience for GPU software. I'm on Windows 10 and have game dvr off.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, sitting at about 50-60 C GPU and 65 C CPU.

Most likely a faulty GPU driver or the power settings of windows.
So re-install the driver and make sure your power settings are on balanced - or try best performance or w/e it's called.

 

If neither of it fixes it, as you have afterburner installed, go and enable temp, power, & voltage limit to show and see which one changes from 0 to 1 in the graphs when the drops occur. (Note: it is fairly common for them to go up and/down, but if one stays on "1" for 10sec+, thats the one causing it. Usualy)

If it is temp -> run the fan on 100% and see if that makes a difference.
If it is power -> make sure your PSU is strong enough to run your system and also check if everything is connected properly, cable wise.
If it is voltage -> (for test purpouse only) either “overclock” your GPU by adding a bit of voltage and see if that makes a difference OR underclock it by removing -100on core and -200on memory for testing.

It is also worth noting that afterburner can show you the GPU core & memory clocks. Which would also be worthwhile to monitor if, and by how much, they change if the FPS drop occurs.
