I built my first computer this week, but its not working and I think I know why.

The Build:

Motherboard: MSI B450M Pro-VDH plus motherboard

CPU:              Ryzen 7 2700

GPU:              Saphire Puulse Radeon RX 570

DRAM:           2x8Gb Corsair

SSD:              PNY 480GB

Power Supply: EVGA 500BT

Assembling it went smoothly (I have replaced parts on PCs before, and G3 sockets are nicer than intel sockets).

But when I tried to start it up, the motherboard's CPU error light lit up. I believe the CPU is not working because the motherboards BIOS is out of date and needs to be updated. Is this a good assumption to make? And if so, what is the cheapest/easiest way to update the BIOS?

Normally it would, but the B450 board supports the R7 2700 natively so a BIOS update wouldnt be required to run the CPU on that board.

Check that the cpu cooler is well mounted and the fan plugged in and running.

If it's not that, it may well be a bent pin. To determine if that is the issue you will have to remove the cooler and carefully remove the cpu to examine the pins on the underside.
