EDIT i found my answer!

windows messed around a lot with the sound settings in the latest update. under Sound settings and "advanced settings" there is "App volume and device preferences." apparently i needed to manually tell OBS which input to use instead of it choosing based on application settings.

OP below.

this might be a longshot. i posted this on the OBS forums as well (hence the log) but i'm hoping to find some quick solutions, as i am restreaming again tomorrow and i want to get this resolved.

i did a restream for a Twitch channel today, and i was unable to get my microphone to be picked up by OBS (as in the mixer did not react at all). the microphone works fine in every other place on Windows, and this is not exclusive to one particular mic/interface/input source.

here are some of the things i tried:

- full system restart
- disable/enable input source in Windows, as well as OBS
- disable input source 1 in OBS and enable input source 2
- uncheck "give applications priority" box in input device control panel
- many many other combinations of pushing buttons / settings / etc
- whitelist the OBS folder in antivirus

OBS was working fine when I was working with it before the most recent Windows 10 update (version 1903, OS build 18362.295) so i'm not sure if something in the update borked it.
